We fail on our own.
If you’ve ever been in charge of something big, or assigned a task that almost felt too big to take on, I’m sure you’ve had the urge at some point to reach out and seek advice and support.
It’s a natural human instinct.
But in our culture, there’s often immediately a wave of fierce independence that sweeps in and demands you stand on your own, either taking advice of the community around you with a very big stand-apart grain of salt, or it prevents us from seeking that support in the first place.
I want you to challenge that.
I want you to stay in the impulse to connect, even from the very middle of your vulnerability.
Before you have it all figured out.
Before you know what the heck you’re doing.
Before you feel like it’s safe to reach out.
Ask. Seek. be curious.
These are all ways of connecting and seeking counsel and mentorship and advice.
Not a single one of us is alone in our experiences. Mothers have struggled before us. Small business owners have struggled before us. People have taken risks and lost before us. There has been sickness, and bankruptcy, and loss, and fear. We aren’t special in this regard.
And yet. How many of us are caught (daily, I might say) in a loneliness and isolation that keeps us small. Keeps us alone. Keeps us doubting ourselves, feeling overwhelmed, and stuck.
So today I want you to listen in to that still small voice reminding you that it’s okay to reach out and let yourself be seen. You don’t have to be perfect, you don’t have to have it all figured out.
Be proud that you are in therapy. You don’t have to be ashamed of it. You aren’t alone.
Be honest about the debt you carry. You don’t have to be ashamed of it. You aren’t alone.
Be open about the fear that kept you up at night. You don’t have to be ashamed of it. You aren’t alone.
And there’s no way in hell you’re going to figure out the path through your personal combination of human circumstances by yourself. That’s not what we’re all here for. We’re here to walk EACHOTHER home, as that quote from Ram Dass reminds us.
We are here for eachother.
And there are others out there waiting to lift us up too. To walk quietly together. To loudly champion us and cheer us over the finish line.
Keep being brave and keep your chin up, looking around for those around you who can use your light, and share their light with you.
With love + light,
Marit
